TOPIC: Lung Cancer TYPE: Fellow Case Reports INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary sequestration is the second most common pulmonary congenital abnormality and rarely associated with malignancy. We present a case of young woman hemoptysis found to have two rare concurrent lung pathologies: carcinoid tumor within sequestration. CASE PRESENTATION: 21 year old female presents following an episode sudden onset hemoptysis. Patient's medical history was notable for prior episodes pneumonia in her teenage years. A CT chest angiogram obtained revealed right upper lobe highly vascular mass-like consolidation. This followed by bronchial artery angiography which identified torturous arterial blood supply abnormal area parenchyma large draining vein. Patient underwent 90 minute robotic resection aberrant suggestive Pathology consistent typical tumor. discharged home on post operative day 1 follow up imaging has not shown recurrence. DISCUSSION: describes tissue anomalous systemic supply. It accounts approximately 6% all abnormalities predominantly affecting males 4:1. Typically patients remain asymptomatic this finding incidentally noted imaging. If superinfected can be confused consolidative pneumonia. Therefore, presentation adults includes recurrent infections These features are also shared primary Typical tumors indolent neuroendocrine that progress slowly metastasize. Although rare, accounting 1% cancers, it malignancy children adolescents. The mainstay treatment, like sequestration, involves resection. Further staging pathological findings determine additional therapies. demonstrates considerations required diagnostic approach poorly characterized lesion when patient life threatening condition such as initial showed lesion, however degree only appreciated angiography. Endobronchial biopsy carried increased risk hemorrhage may been inadequate diagnose underlying surgical favored. CONCLUSIONS: uncommon highlights importance carefully considering these atypical diagnoses multidisciplinary successful diagnosis treatment. REFERENCE #1: Corbett HJ, Humphrey GM. Carcinoid tumor of the lung metastatic to a previously identified pituitary adenoma
The authors present the case of a 58-year-old gentleman presenting with atypical carcinoid tumor of primary lung origin metastasizing to a previously identified pituitary macroadenoma. The patient presented with symptoms of headache and visual disturbance. Imaging revealed enlargement of a known sellar mass as well as three separate enhancing lesions in the brain parenchyma. Resection was accom...
متن کاملLung carcinoid tumor biology: treatment and survival.
A carcinoid tumor is a rare malignant disease which can be cured when localized and treated by surgery. Chemotherapy is not effective, and somatostatin is used for palliation. Rarely is the disease aggressive, and thus does not contribute to a shortening of patient survival. The aim of this study was to define the treatment and survival of patients with primary lung carcinoid tumors. Forty-thre...
متن کاملFocus on treatment of lung carcinoid tumor
Bronchial typical carcinoid tumors are neuroendocrine bronchopulmonary tumors with a low-grade malignancy, and an atypical carcinoid is an intermediate form of these tumors. There is a lack of knowledge on the optimal treatment for these tumors. The surgical treatment of choice consists of a lobectomy supplemented by dissection. The benefit of chemotherapy and radiotherapy is unclear. Targeted ...
